How High Should Your Oven Be? A Kitchen Designer’s Advice

One of the questions that comes up surprisingly often when we’re designing a kitchen is, “How high should my oven be?”

It’s not usually the first thing homeowners think about. Most people are focused on door styles, colours, worktops and storage. But once we start discussing the layout in more detail, the oven’s position becomes much more important.

The truth is, there’s no single "correct" oven height. The best position depends on who is using the kitchen and how they like to cook. What works perfectly for one family might not suit another at all.

Why Oven Height Matters

Think about how often you use your oven. Whether it’s cooking dinner during the week, baking at the weekend, or preparing a big family meal, you’re constantly opening the door, checking the food, and lifting hot dishes in and out.

If the oven is positioned too low, you’ll find yourself bending down every time you use it. If it’s too high, removing heavy trays or casserole dishes can become awkward and potentially unsafe.

Getting the height right isn’t just about convenience. It’s about making the kitchen comfortable to use every day.

The Rise of the Eye-Level Oven

Over the last decade, eye-level ovens have become one of the most requested features in modern kitchens.

By housing the oven in a tall unit, you can raise it to a much more comfortable working height. Instead of crouching down to check whether the roast potatoes are ready, you can simply look through the oven door.

Many of my customers love this option because it feels more practical, especially if they spend a lot of time cooking or baking.

It can also be a good solution for anyone who struggles with back pain or simply wants to reduce unnecessary bending.

Is Eye-Level Always Best?

Not necessarily.

There are still plenty of kitchens where an under-counter oven makes perfect sense.

In smaller spaces, keeping the oven beneath the hob can help maximise storage and maintain a cleaner layout. Some homeowners also prefer having everything in one cooking zone rather than splitting appliances across different areas of the kitchen.

This is why we always advise looking at the overall design rather than focusing on a single feature.

A kitchen should work as a whole.

So What Height Do We Recommend?

As a general guide, we like the centre of the oven to sit somewhere between waist and chest height.

That usually allows you to comfortably see inside the oven without bending and safely remove hot dishes without lifting them too high.

However, the most important factor is the person using it most often.

If you’re particularly tall, shorter than average, or have specific mobility requirements, these factors should all influence the final design.

A kitchen should be tailored around the people who use it, not around a standard measurement on a drawing.
