Tiles vs Splashback: Which Is Right for Your Kitchen?

When planning a new kitchen, it’s often the finer details that make the biggest impact. One of the most common decisions our clients face is whether to go for traditional tiles or a modern splashback. Both options can look fantastic, but the right choice depends on your style, how you use your kitchen, and the overall finish you want to achieve.

Tiles have been a go-to choice for decades, and for good reason. They’re incredibly versatile. Whether you love the classic look of metro tiles, a patterned tile, or a more textured finish, tiles let you add personality to your space. They can be subtle and understated or bold and eye-catching, depending on how you lay them and the colours you choose.
From a practical point of view, tiles are durable and widely available across different price points, making them suitable for a range of budgets. However, they do come with one drawback that’s worth considering – grout lines. While modern grouts are much improved, they still require a bit more maintenance to keep them looking fresh, especially behind hobs or sinks where splashes are more common.

Splashbacks, on the other hand, have grown hugely in popularity, particularly in more contemporary kitchens. Typically made from glass or solid surface materials, splashbacks offer a sleek, seamless finish with minimal joints. This makes them incredibly easy to clean and perfect for busy households where practicality is key.
Design-wise, splashbacks tend to create a more streamlined look. They work particularly well in handleless kitchens, where the goal is a clean, uninterrupted flow.

One of the main considerations with splashbacks is planning. Because they are usually templated and made to measure, measurements need to be precise, and they are typically installed after the worktops. This requires a bit more coordination during installation, but the result is often worth it.

So, which should you choose?

If you’re aiming for a more traditional or characterful kitchen, tiles are often the better fit. They bring warmth, texture, and detail that can really enhance a classic design. On the other hand, if you’re drawn to a modern, minimalist aesthetic, a splashback will likely complement your kitchen beautifully while also making maintenance easier.

In many cases, it’s not about one being better than the other – it’s about what works best for your lifestyle and the look you want to achieve. That’s something we always help our clients navigate during the design process.

If you’re currently planning your new kitchen and weighing up your options, we’d be happy to guide you through the choices and help you find the perfect finish to tie everything together.
